About the project
Presented are three posters designed for horror movies used in a film festival project. The goal was to carry the same theme throughout every piece while using characteristics from their respective movies. The design uses the typefaces found on the actual movie posters. To create the title of the film, a tall sans-serif font was chosen to give the piece a more off-putting feel. They were then carved out using elements from the movie in bright red to help them stand out.
For the purpose of selecting the right movies, the first thing needed was a list of possible options. After building the list, the films were filtered into groups of three based on common themes. From that, the most interesting group was picked and turned into posters. Sketches of the layouts were created. This allowed everything to start falling into place and become more uniform. This is the first iteration of the 'The Visit' poster. One change that formed later on was the yarn. Previously, it would appear on the poster as shown, but it felt out of place and not fully connected to the poster itself. Another thing that changed was the brightness of the background. Throughout every poster, there is the face of the main character in that movie. Since the movies are in the horror genre, a darker shade felt more appropriate.
The layout of the information and logo was also changed to allow more breathing room for the elements. On this version of the posters there was also not lettering made for Incantation yet. Although many different designs were tried nothing stuck until landing on the decayed look you can see in the final. The colors of the faces in each poster were chosen because it was the main color that stuck with the movie throughout its runtime. The green for the visit is a color you see many times while the characters in the movie are exploring their grandparents house in the woods. While the blue is often seen in the dark dreamlike scenes of Hereditary.
